Diagram Brothers Peel Sessions compiled

The Diagram Brothers - I Didn’t Get Where I Am Today By Being A Right Git (Riverside Arts live show, 1982)

Art-punk discordo pioneers The Diagram Brothers have had their sought-after Peel Sessions combined by fantastic Norfolk label LTM. The three sessions, from 1980, 81 and 82, collect fantastic strong performances from slap bang in the midst of the fertile post-punk scene. The tracklisting includes We Are All Animals and Bricks and should be released around April. Preorders can be made at Rough Trade. In the meantime, a great selection of tracks are available on Spotify.

Table Manners post free album, upcoming WRR gigs.

TMAWYIBWRR006Experimental post-punkers Table Manners are very much in the minimalist Prinzhorn Dance School vein, with an authentic early 80s feel despite having only formed a year ago. Always impressive live, they’ve recorded a fantastic set of tracks and released it all as a free download album! Click on the picture above for the Rapidshare link.

Write Record Release, run by the band members themselves, is a burgeoning club night happening monthly at The George Tavern. With the likes of Dignan Porch, Micron 63, Islington Boys Club, and Cotton Club coming up, it’s well worth a night out. The next night is on 26th Feb, and hit read more for full lineups and dates for the next couple months.

Also, we’ve picked a personal fave track from the download album below, as a taster. ‘Sharp 1200′ kicks the collection off with a compelling sample before the ominous drum line leads into this fantastic cold drone track. “Midnight has never been so sharp”, indeed. Grab it below and if you like it, grab the full album via Rapidshare.

Killing Joke - New Wave To New Beat

Killing Joke

Industrial post-punkers Killing Joke feature on the excellent Bustin’ Out, The Post Punk Era 1979-1981 compilation and we’re pleased to have their contribution available for download. The comp is perfectly done, with almighty tracks from Bush Tetras, Josef K and 23 Skidoo alongside this great track and the excellent Lizzy Mercier Descloux, among others. From 1979 to today Killing Joke remain an incredibly influential group. Indeed, if you think you haven’t heard them, you almost certainly have - James Murphy used their ‘Change’ as the bass and drum hook for LCD Soundsystem’s killer ‘Losing My Edge’ and Nirvana’s ‘Come As You Are’ was just as much an “homage” to Killing Joke’s ‘Eighties’ as ‘…Teen Spirit’ was to Boston’s ‘More Than A Feeling’. Anyway, the track is pretty much mindblowing as is, without all the history etc, so download below and check out videos for ‘Change’ and ‘Eighties’ after the jump.

Offset Festival New Bands stage announced

The Duloks

We’re so pleased to finally announce the lineup for the GUITAR HERO New Bands stage at Offset Festival 2009. We’ve had over 2000 (!) submissions through the site and it’s been a pleasure and a struggle in equal measure to hand pick the bands we loved the most.

Headlining the Saturday night are local boys done good DEAD KIDS, whose antagonistic post-punk found the perfect home on boutique label Sparrow’s Tear, home of Selfish Cunt. Saturday night also sees Offset playing host to the sublime garage fuzz-soul of THE RAYOGRAPHS and contenders for single of the year with ‘Graveyard Shift’, FRIENDSHIP – a two-piece rhythm assault with tunes that loop around your head for days.

On Sunday DETACHMENTS are playing for us before they go huge – a few fantastic singles on ThisIsNotAnExit produced by Andrew Weatherall, Trevor Jackson and Tim Goldsworthy (DFA) will be followed by the debut album in 2010 – it’s shaping up to be a blinder. We’re also thrilled to be bringing QUAD THROW SALCHOW to Offset. The band were handpicked to open the DFA’s NotWave compilation featuring the likes of James Chance and Free Blood.

Full lineup after the jump.

A Certain Ratio

ACR

ACR formed in 1978 and over the last 30 years their pioneering brand of punk-funk briefly had NYC looking to Manchester for pointers and turned out to have a huge influence on the likes of LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture, Franz Ferdinand - a whole generation of artists who like to move your feet as well as your mind. One of Factory Record’s many inspired signings, they went on to continually record albums that were ahead of their time and took years to be rediscovered and appreciated. The Soul Jazz label’s reissues in 2004 brought their work to a new audience and since then the band have been carefully selecting shows such as LA’s recent ‘Part Time Punks’ festival alongside The Slits, Love Is All, Pylon, and the sadly cancelled reunion of ACR and ESG which was planned for the Barbican in March. Read on for a full history of A Certain Ratio with comprehensive video and sound…

Tonight! Offset Festival Presents…Factory Floor, Vile Imbeciles and Black Carrot

0011

Next week sees the first Offset Festival presents… night at one of our favourite London venues, Buffalo Bar.

The weekly night will see us put 3 of our favourite bands on stage with guest DJs from our favourite club nights in London, plus residents from Offset and Artrocker magazine.

Our first night has an experimental krautrock/post-punk feel about it, featuring krautrock legends Black Carrot - a band who have played on the same bill with the likes of Faust, The Fall, Polar Bear and Damo Suzuki. Joining them will be the the fierce originality of Factory Floor with their electronic, abrasive, and fiercely original sound, and Vile Imbeciles making a dirty, disjointed meld of punk and noise.

Sound interesting? Read on for more information.
