Seeing as our last post was some Brooklyn dream pop, we thought we’d redress the balance with some No Wave genius. Action Beat are a noise/improv band with a strong DIY ethic, they tour pretty much constantly and have recently released their second album, ‘The Noise Band From Bletchley‘, on Truth Cult, an imprint of Southern Records. Points of reference for many have included early Sonic Youth, Boredoms and Fugazi as well as Besnard Lakes and Crystal Antlers. Read on to check out their tour dates (they sure love gigging) and grab yourself an mp3 for further listening. A few copies of the album are still available here.
New York’s influentially noisy ‘No Wave’ music scene is thought to have been named, at least in part, in rejection and mockery of the ‘New Wave’ pop that was pushed on them by the media of the time.
Therefore, if the NME’s past genre inventions were to be taken seriously, would that mean that Kasms and S.C.U.M etcetera should be referred to as ‘No Rave’?
Now we don’t usually cross the pond to bring you your news, but this is just too fucking cool to ignore. NYC no wave legends Teenage Jesus & The Jerks perform this Friday at the Knitting Factory in New York, bringing back the chaos of late-70s no wave for one night only. There’s plenty going on right now to celebrate: the Thurston Moore-compiled book ‘No Wave:Post Punk, Underground, New York 1976-1980′, a comprehensive Lydia Lunch DVD containing not just Teenage Jesus perfomances but also all her musical collaborations from 1978-2006, and hopefully on 6th August a definitive Teenage Jesus & The Jerks compilation! If, like me, you’ll be half a million miles away from NYC this Friday, try the classic video after the jump. It soothes the pain.
Park Attack are three Scottish noisemakers who released their debut EP, ‘Last Drop At Hide Out’, back in 2003 on the mighty OSCARR label (run by the guys from Optimo!) and then dropped a similarly fantastic full-length called ‘Half Past Human’ on Textile Records in 2006.
They’re a No Wave band, despite the protestations (they call themselves What Wave), so think DNA, Theoretical Girls, early Sonic Youth, Teenage Jesus & The Jerks…. but, labels and genres mean nothing anyways …. You’ll either get this, or not!
Download ‘Tongue n Groove’ (currently down), from their first EP, then run along to here and buy it…. and pick up the album here. And, after the jump, watch a live vid…
