Here’s two great ways to spend your evening tonight.
1/ Head to Soho for White Heat and catch one of our favourite bands, ULTERIOR, fresh from their support slot at the Astoria on Saturday. Here’s what White Heat have to say about it…
“So we booked Le Tetsuo but then hit a bit of a blank and Faris was all like ‘I’ll sort out some bands’ and he booked S.C.U.M. and ULTERIOR. So now we’ve got a nice bill and we’ve got Faris DJing too. Rumours abound he might be playing guitar somewhere in proceedings too. Who knows about that though.”

2/ Alternatively, head to Highbury and you’ll be hearing One More Grain at the always-great Artrocker club. Here’s what they say about it…
> ONE MORE GRAIN (London)
It was only in September 2006 that the band played their first gig, in the dank basement under derelict Bow boozer the Milton Arms, then home to the Xerox Teens. Since then, One More Grain have released debut album ‘Pigeon English’ to critical acclaim, acquired a brand new rhythm section, played numerous gigs (including support slots with Pere Ubu, Mystery Jets, James Chance and Blurt), and recorded second long-player ‘Isle of Grain’. Daniel Quinn’s lyrical story-telling vocals have won fans from John Kennedy to Artrocker’s head honcho Tom and writer Ian Rankin. From psychological lyrical content to seriously moody instrumentation to the point of film noir soundtrack critical acclaim has already been widespread from The Wire to The Sunday Times. Interpretations of traditional songs are promised for a forthcoming John Kennedy Xfm session. ‘Isle of Grain’ out now on White Heat Debut LP ‘Pigeon English’ out now on CD and via iTunes.
> LOAD CLICK SHOOT (Barnstaple)
We (Artrocker) said that ‘load.click.shoot! are about to explode like a disco volcano, projecting highly flammable and devastating molten synth-rock lava across every surface they come across.’ New ferocious recordings by this foursome prove they might just do that. Already developing from a post-hardcore art-punk band with metal riffing somewhere between Test Icicles, Blood Brothers and Forward Russia the tunes and keyboards are now onboard to good effect. There are broken disco beats, yelped triple vocals, and twisted and entwined guitar and keyboard lines behaving like the bastard offspring of Help She Can’t Swim’s abrasive pop and Shit Disco’s punk-disco. Winners of our unsigned band competition and who will feature on our next CD
> NEW BLACK LIGHT MACHINE (London)
Formed in Pontypool, South Wales. A place famous only for being Syd Barrett’s last ever gig with Pink Floyd and the place that probably tipped him over the edge. Channelling some of this madness and taking inspiration from obscure garage, post punk and no wave, songs have evolved into an intense, uncompromising set. Described as Joy Division meets The Birthday Party live show’s focus on energy and use art as an aggressive act to shock people out of their complacency. With skittering funkiness and minimal aesthetics, white noise and distorted guitars and organs and a Mark E Smith penchant, a new Xeroxed Teens is born. Whether synth drones, post-punk abrasion or krautrock simplicity, we call it artrock.
